The Last of The 2008

Hi Friends! Yes, this is the last day of the 366 days of the year, so... let me wish all of you loyal readers, bloggy friends and newcomers a Happy and Blessed New Year!

NOTE TO INGE': Before I forget, if you are reading this, just want to let you know that I can't seem to leave any comments anymore on your blog. Maybe something you left out when you recently changed your blog's template.

I must tell you that I absolutely did not expect to learn so many things, and make so many friends on the blogosphere. All I had in mind was to look at how others view this world, the things they experienced, and what are their perspectives, their passions in life, what makes them happy, sad, angry, etc., how they go through life. I truly want to say that I had enjoyed reading all of your blogs too! You had made my life richer, more colourful, and more knowledgeable. For those of you new here, I strongly encourage you to click on the links I have on the right side of my blog... those are my bloggy friends! Great blogs they have... as Yoda would have said it :)

I'm very happy that I have made so many new friends here, and again, I would sincerely like to express my deepest gratitude to all of you who had been constantly visiting my blog, and taking the extra effort to leave comments on my posts. Of the more than 600 visits to my blog every month, of the more than 900 page views on my blog every month, I get on the average 2 to 3 comments every post. Sometimes none, sometimes 6. So that would mean about 80 to 90 comments per month. So that means only 15% of all that visitors leave comments. Or 10% of all the page viewers. So you see how meaningful it is to me when you leave comments. I'm not concerned about how many visits or page views I get every month. I am more grateful for those 15% and 10% of you who had been loyally and faithfully reading and giving me great comments and advice and encouragement! I don't have to list your names here. Your names are all listed in all the comments section of all the posts!!!

In appreciation, I would love to dedicate this song to you. Thank you for reading my blog and commenting, but above all, thank you for your FRIENDSHIP :) Take care, God bless, and have a great new year!

Atrocious Tuesday

Hi Friends! I hope you all had a great Tuesday, but obviously I didn't. It was pretty terrible. It wasn't because it was the last day of vacation for me, but it was because I went to renew my passport in the morning.

I reached the Immigration Department at about 9am, and there were hundreds of people there. What in the world? Don't these people have to work??? I guess they are like me, still off on this day.

ANYWAYS... here's the stressful and frustrating part of my "beautiful" Tuesday.

I started by queuing at Counter One, since that is the place I went last time, the previous time I renewed my passport almost 5 years ago. It wasn't expired yet, the actual date is Oct 13, 2009 but since I had time, I thought of doing it earlier, since I will need to renew it anyway before going to the States.

Ok, so it took about 30 minutes before the queue was cleared and I told the officer that I wanted to renew my passport. He said I didn't have to queue here, but there is a kiosk at the end of the hall that can renew your passport.

Great! So I happily went to that kiosk and voila... the queue was horrendous, all because of? There's only one machine. It's AMAZING! The kiosk is supposed to make things faster, but they only had one of it.

Nevermind... patience, I told myself. I joined the queue at 9:37am.

Have you ever been in a queue that hardly seemed to move? Well, that's what happened to me. It hardly seemed to move. Thank God no one fainted. And guess what time was it when I reached the machine? Close to 12 noon.

BRAVO? Wait... so I took out my ID and passport and slotted both into the machine, and the most miraculous thing happened!!!

The machine can't read either my passport or my ID.

The people behind me were saying, "Poor thing" for a good reason, because they were in that horrible queue too, and then, for me, it was for nothing.

The officer next to the machine said, "You have to go to Counter One to renew your passport."

That's it? Not even a sorry? Sigh... amazing people...

Ok, so I thought I already came this far, so I might as well go back to Counter One to do this.

And LO AND BEHOLD, a long queue at Counter One. It must had been at least an hour before I reached the same officer again.

After explaining to him my predicament, he just passed me a form, and said, "One ringgit, and pass it back to me when you had filled it up."

That's it? Not even a sympathetic word, or sorry? What's wrong with these people? And not a single offer of giving me an express service, to compensate me for all the lost time.

So I went somewhere to fill up the form, and perhaps because the Immigration Department didn't get sufficient allocation from the government, they didn't provide any pen, so I had to purchase it at the nearby store. RM1.20 for a very ordinary pen that only costs 40 sen in the supermarket. Great! I think they really needed the money.

After filling it, I went back to Counter One, and tell me why I should be surprised to see another long queue? Hmmm... and it took another hour or so before I reached him.

He checked it, and passed me a queue ticket.

The lucky number on it was 1217. And they are currently serving 1092. If you do your maths, (sorry I can't, because my mind refused to cooperate) that's NOT many people ahead of me, right? Please tell me I am right???

I was having quite a headache at that moment, due to the queuing and amazing service they are providing. So I decided to head back home first, and then come back to do it. Even if they are so efficient that it takes only ONE MINUTE to process each application, it will still take more than an hour to reach me. And what if they took TWO MINUTES OR MORE for each applicant? Sigh...

When I reached home at about 3 something, my head was throwing a rock concert on its own without my consent. I couldn't stop it, so I took a nap. And after an hour, I woke up with the pain still there. I contemplated going back to that hellish place again, but I just couldn't motivate myself enough to even get up from the bed. Who knows maybe they DID become very efficient, and probably missed my number already... and then what? Queue again?

THAT'S IT. ENOUGH. GAME OVER.

ZZZZZZZZZZ......

Body Piercings

Guinness World Record holder for the 'Most Pierced Woman' Elaine Davidson, poses for a photograph in the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland showing some of her 5920 piercings on May 16, 2008.

What do you make of that? I find it repulsive and totally weird. I had never been a fan of body piercings, and I don't intend to puncture or cut any part of my body for any reason. I know that there are RISKS related to body piercings:

1. Allergic reaction to ingredients of products used to clean the new piercing, or of ancillary products used in proximity to the piercing (e.g., soap, hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, antibacterial products, antiseptic medicines, makeup, hair spray, swimming pool chlorine, etc.).

2. Chlorine from swimming pools may cause the pierced area to dry out, which may cause the piercing to be torn out very easily.

3. Allergic reaction to the metal in the piercing jewelry, particularly nickel.

4. Bacterial infection, particularly from Staphylococcus aureus, group A streptococcus and Pseudomonas spp. Reports at the 16th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in 2006 indicated that such infections are seldom serious, but that between 10-20% of piercings result in local benign bacterial infection. Infection due to piercing of the tongue can be FATAL. Know what that means? F.A.T.A.L. = D.E.A.D.

5. Parasitic and protozoan infections may occur by swimming in lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans during the healing period.

6. Excess scar tissue, which can be caused by improper piercing, cleansing, and stretching. This may result in loss of sensation and difficulty piercing and stretching that area of skin in the future.

7. Keloid formation can sometimes occur, particularly among people who are pre-disposed to this condition through heredity.

8. Trauma, usually associated with unintended entanglement of the piercing jewelry with another object. This risk is greatest for fresh piercings, but is always present.

9. Viral infection, particularly from hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. However, it is important to note that although hepatitis has been transmitted through the practices of ear piercing, body piercing, and tattooing, there have not been any documented cases of HIV transmission associated with these procedures. Piercing guns have been documented to spread HIV and hepatitis (A, B and C).

10. Recession of gingival tissue affecting 19% to 68% of subjects with lip and/or intra-oral ornaments. In some cases, the alveolar tooth-bearing bone is also involved, jeopardizing the stability and durability of the teeth in place and required a periodontal regeneration surgery.

11. Dental fracture and wear, affecting 14% to 41% of subjects with lip and/or intra-oral ornaments.

Whatever it is, if you are a body piercing fanatic, DON'T go near a magnet. Can you imagine what would happen to Elaine Davidson if she got close to a large magnet? Say CHEESE!

Ooppss!

I had marched before, and was the squadron leader for a few years, for the Red Crescent (Red Cross in other countries) squad. I can recall vividly the times we spent marching under the hot sun, underwent military marching training from the Army, and stood at attention for more than 2 hours under the burning sun, in preparation for the annual school sports day, the annual Red Crescent Day and of course, the interschool marching competition.

I wasn't the highest ranked officer, only a Corporal (2 stripes), but because I had the loudest voice, strict discipline and good marching skills, I was chosen to lead the marching squad. And it was fun, marching. And it feels really good to be in uniform :) Guess which one is me? :)

Thank God that for the many times I had marched, nothing like the above had ever happened!!! LOL I wonder if he continued or stepped away. Continuing will be really risky! And too revealing! Hahaha...

2008: 4 days remaining

Wow, isn't it amazing? 2008 is almost gone. A year had gone by. And in less than 2 weeks' time, I'll not be in my twenties anymore.

For the benefit of those new to my blog, and for the benefit of those friends who still don't know what is happening to me soon in the next few months, I shall re-post my
Important Dates post, with new updates, of course. For those of you who had already read this (twice), you may skip everything and just read the 2nd update in RED :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Important Dates! (RE-POST - WITH NEW UPDATES) (2ND UPDATE)
This is going to be a really short post but one of the most important of all posts I had ever put up :)
Dec 7 ~ Singapore Marathon (I'm running the half marathon)
26 days seems like just around the corner!!! On the other hand, I just can't wait, because I'm fully trained to compete. Had been training for 6 months. We'll see huh? I'm aiming to complete the 21km in 2 hours and 10 minutes. That's about how long it takes for me to drive to Ipoh this Wednesday... madness!!! LOL (Done this, and I won't repeat what I had shared in my previous post HERE)
Dec 25 ~ Jesus' birthday I'm budgeting around RM777.77 this Christmas for gifts. Although I'd never in my life received gifts worth more than RM100 (every friends' gifts combined) in any Christmas ever, I am still inclined to give as much as I am comfortable in giving. I had always held on to the belief that it is more blessed to give than to receive :) Besides, I need to grow in my giving. Spent RM500++ last year. Maybe that's why I'm blessed with so many other things, like a superb wife-to-be, a great job, a house, a car, favour wherever I go, etc. Thank You Jesus! (Achieved my target, and I won't repeat what I had shared in my previous post HERE)
Jan 5 ~ My sister's birthday I had already given her the iPod that my baby blessed me with the last time she came over to my place last month, so no need to spend anymore :) I had never touched it ok, in case you all think that I'm giving my sister second-hand stuffs for her birthday. And why am I giving it away? Because I don't need it. Simple as that :) (No new updates)
Jan 7 ~ My baby's birthday Me :) (No new updates)
Jan 12 ~ My birthday Her :) (No new updates)
End Jan ~ TOEFL Exam About 3 months left to study! YIKES! (I couldn't register for the end Jan dates because they are full! But I managed to register successfully for Feb 28, starting 9:00am, ending 1:30pm. Time to seriously hit the books! About 2 months or so of serious studying... or else I would waste the RM150 I paid! And not sufficient time to study for the GMAT, which is much tougher...)
Feb 11 ~ My baby's BACK! Wooooooohooooooo! Can't wait! Dreamt about her coming back last night :) (Will need to bring her to do her visa to China by this day, first thing when she is back, and then collect the visa in the afternoon. In between, need to see the Pastor's wife for counselling, and also see Sarah's mom, our official florist. Of course, if not possible, then will need to do these two latter events the next day or the day after that, no matter what.)
Feb 12 ~ Marriage signing ceremony at 10:00am, as per my previous update below (Feb 14) in GREEN.
Feb 14 ~ Marriage registration (Legally married) I had managed to book this date with Klang's Hokkien Association last week... phew... and got to know that traditionally, because hundreds of couples are getting registered on this day, they don't conduct the signing ceremony on the day itself. So I had to go with her, her witness, and my witness on Feb 12 to do the marriage signing ceremony and then on Feb 14, go collect the marriage certificate, which will be dated Feb 14, and of course, take some photos! Since it is a very special date, the cost was RM160, RM100 more expensive than other "ordinary" dates. But what is RM100 when it comes to commemorating an extremely special and important date? (Are we supposed to wear special clothings for this day? Like full suit and all? But this is not the actual wedding yet wor... But then again, T-shirt and jeans is a bit funny... Any idea?)
Feb 14-21 Wedding photo-shooting in Guangzhou, China Dang, not only we need to prepare for this trip but we need to prepare to look good too... from top to bottom. No kidding. This will be my first trip to Guangzhou, my second to China. (Will need to go make my visa and her mom's visa this coming Tuesday. Yes, her mom is tagging along. And dang, I am running out of time to look good. Probably I'll put up posts on this... bleargh...)
Mar 7 ~ Our 24th Anniversary of being together :) We are celebrating this earlier, in Guangzhou :) (For confused readers, we celebrate our anniversary every month... makes sense now?)
May 1 ~ My brother's birthday His 24th. Hmmm... haven't thought of what to get him... When is the next Mega Sales? (Sales is happening now, but maybe there's another one nearer to his birthday? I'm spending quite a lot already this month, and I had yet to service my car, and there's the RM1200 insurance premium next month. Maybe I should just ask him what he wants...)
May 23 ~ My dad's birthday His 63rd. I had already bought him something a few months ago :) (Please remind me to bring it back this coming Chinese New Year!)
July 21 ~ Wedding dinner in Kuching, Sarawak (my hometown) Booked the restaurant already, now compiling the list of guests to invite. (Ok, ok, I know I need to get down to the details... will start doing that in the next few days... I hope... ooppss...)
July 25 ~ Church wedding, Lunch reception, Exclusive dinner (Officially married) Booked the church hall, florist (Auntie Lydia), pastor... now need to book the caterer for lunch, and do up the list of guests. Already booked the restaurant below my office as standby for the dinner. Not yet finalise the dinner venue with my future father-in-law as he is currently in Beijing. (Ditto!)
End July ~ GMAT Exam About 8 months left to study something totally unrelated to my field of expertise... *gulp* (And I haven't bought the books yet! YIPES! Hello? Wake up!)
Aug ~ Goodbye Malaysia! Happy? Sad? Hmmm... probably both :I (Ok, for those of you who STILL don't know, STILL don't get the hints I dropped here and there all over my blog, STILL never hear the gossips about me, STILL know nuts about me - get this... I'm leaving Malaysia to the United States of America, mainly to gain overseas working experience and also to do my MBA and of course, to be with my lovely beloved wife, who is already there since July this year. Many people will think that I must be out of my mind, going to a country going through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and soaring unemployment rates, etc. But I believe things will change. America will recover. And how long will I be there? I don't know. At least 10 years? Maybe forever? I really can't decide now. We'll see how God leads. Yes, I know, Pastor's been preaching up and down about this is God's time for Asia, and all that, so we'll see... no matter what, I'm going. I need NEW challenges... And by the way, if you are my colleague reading this, like "some" people I know who secretly read my blog without leaving comments, heh heh heh... please keep this to yourself, ok? Thanks!)
Mysterious money 0__o
I was about to go get my dinner for the day, and I know I had about RM30 left in my wallet, so I double-checked to make sure the thirty is there, since I wanted to get the Double Prosperity Burger - Large.
But I noticed that there is money in the area in my wallet, the compartment where I usually keep my tithe, or money I am giving back to God, for whatever reasons.
RM120.
Now where did that money come from? It couldn't be my tithe, since it is more than triple of that amount. And I just can't recall what is that RM120 for. It couldn't be my car loan installment for the month. For a wedding dinner? I don't think so. I don't usually give that amount. It's either RM100 or RM222.22. Do I owe someone RM120? Hmmm...
So I had a few theories:
1. Santa broke into my house last night, and left the RM120 there.
2. A thief broke into my house last night, and decided to give me back the money he/she stole.
3. God created the money.
4. I absentmindedly placed my usual cash in that compartment.
5. It's not real - it will disappear by the next morning.
6. I'm dreaming (and dream-blogging too!).
7. I was abducted by aliens! RM120 is just a cover-up. The TRUTH is out there!
Hmmm... weird. Well, at least it's a good thing. At least I FOUND money, not I LOST money... heheheh... :)
Have a great weekend friends!
My first family Christmas dinner
I just got back from my future in-laws' Christmas dinner. Yes, believe it or not, I had been eating Christmas dinners all these while alone, for at least 10 over years, since my own family are not saved yet.
And I did have a good time. It's funny that my future wife is not around, but I am already spending so much time with them... first the trip to Melaka, and now the Christmas dinner. All without the main actress present. LOL
Oh, and we celebrated all the December babies too, and there were so many of them! 5 guys, including the eldest uncle, my future father-in-law and my future brother-in-law, and 1 girl.
And of course, the FOOD! Absolutely good! There was stuffed roasted turkey, Shepherd's Pie, steamed duck, curry chicken, fried squid with cheese, and many more! I think I put on 1kg in one night! Hahaha...
But I think the best thing is, everyone treated me like I am already part of the family, although legally and in the eyes of God, not yet :p
And I received a present too from them!
Merry Christmas everyone!!!
Christmas presents :)
Just got back from my church's Christmas evangelistic concert, and here are my pressies for this year :) Starting from the bottom of all the items, with the pink wrapper, is Marks & Spencer's Viennese Biscuit Selection from Sarah. On the left, with the black and pink wrapper, is Teuscher Chocolate with Pink Pepper from Wei Luen. On the right of it is a red colour pen, with a wooden Santa head at the other end, from Alex. Next to that is a candy cane from Sam, and on the most right is a packet of homemade cookies from Peter. And not forgetting, at the south-most part is a gingerbread man from Angie.
Apart from the pen, all are food items. I guess my friends want me to put on more weight! LOL But I am already approaching 75kg, my targeted weight!
Thank you guys for these Christmas presents. It's not the gift but the thought that counts :) And Adrian, if you are reading this, no worries. I know that God will bless you superabundantly. Don't feel bad, but feel happy that I could bless you :) Glad that you liked it ;) Study hard and get good results ok? I will be more happy seeing you get good results, than you buying something for me. Take care brother.
And did I achieve my targeted spending for Christmas presents this year? Yes! Thank You Lord for blessing me that my cup overflows, and I could bless others abundantly :)
Top Runners of 2008: A Tribute
As the year draws to a close, let's see who are the best runners of the year, shall we?
Yes, this is a little unconventional. Most would look at big stars like (not in ranked order):
1. Michael Phelps, who owns strings of world records in swimming - 14 career Olympic gold medals (the most ever), 8 Olympic gold medals (the most in an Olympic ever) with 7 of that in world record times, and hey, he's only 23, two months younger than my brother.
2. Usain Bolt - 3 Olympic gold medals with all 3 of that in world record times (never before in history) in the 100m, 200m and 4 X 100m, and also breaking Michael Johnson's 12 years world record in the 200m even with a -0.9 m/s head wind blowing against him! No sprinter in history had ever set a world record with THAT strong a head wind. Guess what? He's only 22.
3. Rafael Nadal - ended legendary Roger Federer's 237 consecutive weeks at the top of tennis rankings, ended Federer's record streak of five consecutive Wimbledon titles and 65 straight wins on grass courts, ended the year as number one despite injuries, won the 4th straight French Open, became the first male player ranked in the top five to win the Olympic gold medal, and hey, he's only 22.
4. Tiger Woods - limping and wincing and gimping on a left leg that he would later admit had two stress fractures in addition to a wrecked knee, Tiger birdied the 18th hole to force an 18-hole Monday playoff against Rocco Mediate in the U.S. Open. On the first sudden death hole, he won it. Within days, he was undergoing surgery on his leg that would sideline him for the rest of the season and the beginning of 2009. Considering his injury and Mediate’s heroic play, it went down as one of the greatest Opens ever and the greatest win of Woods’ incredible career. It was the 14th major of his career, just four short of Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record.
5. Danica Patrick - the first woman to win an Indy Car race. Who said women can't drive? She is 26.
6. Lewis Hamilton - became at 23 the youngest F1 champion ever — and also the sport’s first black champion.
7. Elmo - winning the World Cookie Eating Championship. He is only 3 and a half years old.
As you may have observed, in websites, newspapers, TVs, these are the names that will normally appear when it comes to top athletes of the year. But what happened to runners? They deserve a tribute too! So here's my compilation and tribute to all these great runners of this year, a great source of inspiration to me :)
1. Haile Gebrselassie - broke his own world record in the marathon, with the time of 2:03:59, the first sub-2:04 in history. He also set the year's best time in the half marathon, with the time of 59:15.
2. Dayron Robles - broke the world record in the 110m hurdles, with the time of 12.87 seconds.
3. Tirunesh Dibaba - broke the world record in the women's 5000m, with the time of 14:11.15.
4. Gulnara Samitova-Galkina - broke the world record in the women's 3000m steeplechase, with the time of 8:58.81, the first sub-9:00 in history.
5. Kenenisa Bekele - set the year's best time in the 10km, with the time of 26:25.97. He is still the current world record holder of 26:17.53, a record since 2005. He also set the year's best time in the 5km, with the time of 12:50.18. He is also still the current world record holder of 12:37.35, a record since 2004.
6. Paul Kipsiele Koech - set the year's best time in the 3000m steeplechase, with the time of 8:00.57.
7. Irina Mikitenko - set the year's best time for women in the marathon, the 4th fastest time in history, with the time of 2:19:19.
Kudos to these great runners :)
S.O.S.
We all know that we need that once in a while. Who can go through life without asking for help from a friend or someone else?
Many times, pride gets in the way.
"It's ok, I can do it."
"No worries."
"I'm fine."
"That won't be necessary."
And then we end up taking a very long time to complete the task, when, if we HAD accepted the help, we could had already finished the task in half the time, maybe, and move on to do something else.
And more than many times, we never bothered to ASK for HELP. It's one thing people offering to help, and another we ourselves asking for help. Chances are, we seldom ask for help, as compared to accepting help when offered.
Why is that? Pride again? Or the wrong perception that people might be too busy to help? Or they might think we are a nuisance? Or think we are inferior, incapable, incompetent, etc.? Or too shy to ask? Or fear of rejection? Or perhaps we think that it would be faster to complete it on our own, since if we asked for help, we need to explain things to the prospective helper, and also maybe they might not be of help, since they might ruin it and make things worse? What do you think?
The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (KJV) that
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
King Solomon, the wisest man ever, wrote that. I'm sure Solomon could have managed many things by himself, since he's so smart. But nope. He thinks that we all need help. We need friends. We need someone to go through life together with us, helping one another along the way.
I truly appreciate all the people whom God had put in my life - countless number of people who had helped me, mentored me, taught me, encouraged me - people who had helped made me into who I am today. I'm very glad that I am not all alone in this world. I am grateful that when I fall down, there is someone to help me up, someone I can call for help. And I am very very happy that when I am in the States next year, come winter, I will have someone to help keep me warm, someone who would go through life together with me most of the time, someone I would call my lovely beloved wife come July 25. I am glad that all of you are part of my life and I look forward to many more years of this wonderful friendship.
Thanks for reading this and I wish you a pleasant day :)
Reuters Images of the Year 2008 (PART ONE)
A picture speaks a thousand words. You might be a good writer, but a good photographer beats you hands down, anytime, anywhere. But a good photographer AND writer beats them both :)
There are more than 500 of these images, but I have selected a few of them that I personally find interesting and intriguing, and will divide this to 5 parts... 16 selected pictures from every 100 pictures :) Of course, feel free to disagree with me on my selection :) I welcome criticism.
A polar bear shakes his body to remove water at the St-Felicien Wildlife Zoo in St-Felicien, Quebec March 6, 2008.
My comment: Have anyone been to this zoo? Ron? I would love to :)
Ronnie DeLarue gets bucked off Pepper Roll in the Novice Bareback event at the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, July 4, 2008.
My comment: An oh shit moment!
A tribesman from Asmat district is seen during the Asmat festival in Indonesia's remote province of Papua October 11, 2008. The Asmats are known for their artistic ancestral woodcarving. The festival is aimed at promoting tourism for the region.
My comment: I think he flips that thing up when he needs to eat, but not too high, or else it will block his eyesight :p
A man struggles against the wind with his umbrella as Typhoon Jangmi hits Taipei September 28, 2008. The strong typhoon churned toward Taiwan on Sunday, with winds of up to 227 kph and dumping torrential rains as it forced flight and work cancellations ahead of its expected landfall later in the day.
My comment: I don't think his umbrella is of any help at all!
An artist performs in front of a poster during the 16th Indonesian International Motor Show 2008 in Jakarta July 11, 2008. Indonesian vehicle sales are expected to top 500,000 units this year, despite a government decision to raise subsidised fuel prices in May, a senior industry association official said on Friday.
My comment: How IRONIC! I think the ad is meant to make people NOT buy cars.
Belarussians attend confession at a Catholic church during the annual Icon of the Mother of God festival in the village of Budslav, some 150 km (93 miles) north of Minsk, July 1, 2008.
My comment: This is really weird!
A competitor dives from the 14 metre-high bridge over Drina river during annual high diving competition in Bosnian town of Visegrad July 12, 2008.
My comment: Dang! I thought that was Superman :)
Grooms take part in a mass wedding ceremony in Riyadh June 24, 2008. Governor of Riyadh Prince Salman and a local group organized a mass wedding for about 1600 couples to help young people who are unable to afford expensive ceremonies because of the rising cost of living.
My comment: WHAT? 1600 couples? Is that a world record?
Rockets fly over bell tower of Ayios Marcos church during Greek Orthodox Easter celebrations on the eastern Aegean island of Chios late April 26, 2008. Two rival parishes of Vrontados village fire thousands of rockets every Easter Saturday aiming at the opposing church's bell tower in a centuries-old tradition.
My comment: Whaaaaaaaaat???
Labourers carry bricks on their heads at a brick kiln at Kodhasar village, 40 km (25 miles) south of the northern Indian city of Allahabad April 30, 2008.
My comment: Oh my God! I'll bet you haven't seen this before!
A participant dressed as movie character "Mum Flodder" speeds down a street during the first German office chair racing championship in the village of Bad Koenig-Zell about 70km south-west from Frankfurt, April 26, 2008.
My comment: CHAIR RACING CHAMPIONSHIP??? Now that's a new one! LOL
Men dressed in traditional costumes throw water on a woman as part of traditional Easter celebrations during a presentation to the media in Mezokovesd, 130 km (81 miles) east of Budapest March 20, 2008. Locals from northeast Hungary celebrate Easter with a "watering of the girls", a fertility ritual rooted in Hungary's tribal pre-Christian past.
My comment: HUH??? That's not in Christianity... weird.
Men play with snow in Amman January 31, 2008. A heavy overnight snowstorm blanketed Jordan on Wednesday, closing schools and stores and grounding public transportation.
My comment: I would do that too :) if it suddenly snowed in Malaysia :)
Brahmin priests raise their hands towards the royal urn, honouring the remains of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej's late sister Princess Galyani Vadhana, as they stand upon a carriage next to a palanquin during her cremation ceremony in Bangkok November 15, 2008. Tens of thousands of Thais came out on the streets of Bangkok to pay their respects to the late Princess Galyani, who will be cremated later in the evening. The royal crematorium is seen in the background.
My comment: Welcome to Thailand! I don't think you see this very often in Bangkok.
Ethiopia's marathon runner Haile Gebrselassie crosses the finish line to set a new world record at the 35th Berlin marathon in Berlin September 28, 2008. Gebrselassie clocked 2:03.59. In the background is the Brandenburg Gate.
My comment: WOW! This means that he did double of the distance I ran, and still finished an hour ahead of me. Crazy huh? He is the best long distance runner ever, truly.
A child drinks water at a flood relief camp in Araria district town in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, September 7, 2008. Authorities battling a massive deluge in eastern India issued public warnings on Friday of more floods to come and asked villagers not to return home from temporary shelters yet.
My comment: I saved this picture for last, as it is my favourite, among all these 16. Let's not forget that there are people like this boy during this Christmas season :)
Beast Stalker
Hi Friends! Time for a movie review. I haven't done that for ages here on my blog, ever since I discovered Flixster on Facebook, hence,
had been doing movie reviews there. But this recent movie that I saw couldn't be found on Flixster, and I felt sooooo compelled to review this movie so I just had to do it here :)
Yes, the title of the movie was Beast Stalker, but fret not, this is not another horror movie of someone stalking a beast. Hmmm... come to think about it, shouldn't it be the beast stalking the man??? LOL
Anyways, the movie was really good.
For those who had not watched it yet, you may STOP READING NOW, if you planned to catch it. Because my next paragraph will be a spoiler. Go ahead leave now. No offences :)
Still here? This is the last chance. See ya in the next post :)
Ok, so here goes the story. You wouldn't be able to grasp the full essence of how good the movie is until you had watched it, from beginning to the end. And yes, the creative "twist" in the plot is at the end. I seriously didn't EXPECT IT!!! Dang! It's like, the whole movie is so fast paced, so full blooded, packed with heart-bursting moments and actions, and then, when you realized how everything is actually connected, wohhhhh........ it's amazing!
It started with a group of policemen, led by their boss (acted by Nicholas Tse), preparing to ambush a drug house. Before I continue, I must commend the acting of Nicholas Tse. I love his singing, his songs, but I seriously must say that his acting had improved tremendously! Serious shit. Pardon me England, but it is THAT good! No kidding. It's like he really put ALL his superbly best effort to bring out his character. I really admire him, how he put up with the scandal of his wife, Cecilia Cheung.
Ok, back to the story. So one thing led to another, there was a car chase. Then there was this traffic light that was RED. Of course, nobody stopped, and then...
A HUGE
BANG!!!
The cops' car were hit by another car from the passenger side, and the bad guys' car managed to just spin off due to the impact of the cops' car crash, and hit another car (a third), not so badly. Nicholas got out, badly injured, while the bad guys got out, and took over the next car (not the one that hit the cops' car) and sped off. In the process of getting away, Nicholas managed to fire a few shots, and I think the gun he used must be so damned powerful that the bullets hit the driver through the boot, through the backseat and through the front seat, and the car crashed. When he got to the car, the driver was dead, the bad guy boss was critically injured, not dead, but THEN, he saw... blood coming out from the boot! And when he opened it, there was a little girl, dead, because his shots went through her! He was so shocked..... that he accidentally killed a little girl. He didn't know there was a girl in the boot. Nobody knew why there was a girl in the boot, until the ending of the movie.
Anyways, months later, Nicholas was still stricken with extreme guilt. And the driver of the third car, the mother of the girl whom Nicholas accidentally killed, was preparing the court case for that bad guy boss who survived. Yes, she was a district attorney. And guess what? She had another daughter, the twin sister of the one who died.
And one thing led to another, the second girl was kidnapped, and the bad guy boss threatened to kill her if the mother didn't "lose" the case, and let the bad guy boss go free.
And the kidnapper was Nick Cheung, who also acted brilliantly. He had been doing bad things for 20 over years. Killing, kidnapping, etc. He was cold-blooded, but at times, showed a soft spot when it comes to taking care of his wife who lays on a bed, paralysed completely. Couldn't move, couldn't speak. He himself had only one eye, and the other eye is not entirely good. It had tiny glass splinters, which seriously needed surgery, or he could go completely blind. With that one eye, he couldn't see properly, no colours. It's just amazing that you could actually feel for a bad guy, the way the director portrayed his sad life and character, but nonetheless, he is still a cold-blooded killer and kidnapper.
Apparently, Nicholas was just a few steps away when the little girl, the second one was kidnapped. And one thing led to another, he tried all means to locate the second girl. I mean, you've got to understand how he feels. He had "killed" one of the girls already. He just couldn't bear the thought (or guilt) of not being able to help save the other one.
And eventually, he found the location of the girl, and one thing led to another - fast forward a little bit - the chase finally reached a deserted basement. Super dark. Amazingly, the wife on the bed, helped cut the little girl's rope-cuffs, and she managed to run free and found Nicholas. But Nick found them both, and he was ordered to kill the girl, because the mom did not follow the bad guy boss' instructions.
A fight ensued, and Nicholas LOST! Dang! And Nick chased the little girl, through a small tunnel, and without hesitation he emptied sand or wood debris, I can't be sure, on the little girl, cos he saw where she was hiding. Nicholas caught up and managed to knock Nick out with a hit on the head with a rock. And then he frantically scrambled to dig and look for the girl. When he found the girl, she was lifeless. Oh man... the expression he had! "Please don't die!!!" "Please wake up!!!" And all that with so much emotion and you really feel that he is sincere, not acting anymore. That was superbly great acting.
And THANK GOD! The girl didn't die!!! You know the drill... the little fingers moved a little, and then the eyes opened. But Nick woke up too!!! OH NO! Nicholas was no match for him. But guess what??? Nick became completely BLIND!!! He fumbled and stumbled! So poor thing! And he stabbed himself when he banged into the wall which had a sharp metal coming out. And he cried out to Nicholas to help him get to his wife, his final request.
All thing's well eh? Is that the end of the movie? NOPE. Here comes the "twist". Nick, the bad guy was actually driving his wife, who was about to deliver their first baby, amniotic fluid came out already, to the hospital. He was panicky, looking at the wife, and then the road, and then the wife and didn't see the cops' car in time. BANG!!! The baby died, but the wife survived, which explains why the wife was completely paralysed, and why Nick lost one of his eyes, and the glass splinters in the other.
The third car, which the bad guys took over, it was before shoving the mother to the floor, they put the little girl into the BOOT!!!
And Nicholas didn't see all that happen, because his car was still turning from side to side due to the impact of the big crash! Had he seen the girl being shoved into the boot, he wouldn't have fired those deadly but accurate shots.
Did you see the brilliance of this movie? I mean, these people's life were connected, tragically, through a traffic accident. They never knew each other before the accident. And the explanations of why this and why that, all because of THAT bad accident. Interesting huh? I just LOVE movies like that! And if you didn't follow my instructions to stop reading this post if you intended to watch this movie, TOO BAD. It wouldn't be nice anymore, now that you know the whole story, and the TWIST at the end.
Ah well, a great movie, and 2 thumbs and 2 big toes up from me! And please don't ask me why the movie title's "Beast Stalker". LOL the ending didn't explain the title. Go ask the director or story writer yourself :p
Tonight
I miss you baby... this song is dedicated to you :*
Lately I'm so tired
If I took it all I'll warn you
I never meant to
If I left you outside
If you ever felt like I'd ignore you
No my life is all you
So put your best dress on
And wrap yourself in the arms of someone
Who wants to give you all the love you want
Tonight, I'm gonna make it up to you
Tonight, I'm gonna make love to you
Tonight, you're gonna know how
much I missed you, baby
Tonight, I dedicate my heart to you
Tonight, I'm gonna be a part of you
Tonight, you're gonna know
how much I miss you
And I miss you so
I don't wanna act like
I know that you'd be mine forever
Though I hope it's forever
Don't want you to feel like
I take you for granted
Whenever we are together
So put your best dress on
And wrap yourself in the arms of someone
Who wants to give you all the love you want
Tonight, I'm gonna make it up to you
Tonight, I'm gonna make love to you
Tonight, you're gonna know how
much I miss you, baby
Tonight, I dedicate my heart to you
Tonight, I'm gonna be a part of you
Tonight, you're gonna know
how much I miss you
And I miss you so
Oh yeah
So put your best dress on
And wrap yourself in my arms of my love
Tonight, I'm gonna make it up to you
Tonight, I'm gonna make love to you
Tonight, you're gonna know how
much I miss you, baby
Tonight, I dedicate my heart to you
Tonight, I'm gonna be a part of you
Tonight, you're gonna know
how much I miss you
Baby
Tonight, I'm gonna make it up to you
Tonight, I'm gonna make love to you
Tonight, you're gonna know how
much I miss you, baby
Tonight, I dedicate my heart to you
Tonight, I'm gonna be a part of you
Tonight, you're gonna know
how much I miss you
And I miss you so
1st 3-mile run :)
I ran my first 3-mile run today, finishing in 31 mins and 40 seconds. I mean, of course I had run 3 miles or more before, but I'm referring to the entire run itself, which is solely 3 miles. This is an upgrade from my previous 2-mile runs, after learning that the Marines are doing 3-mile runs, not 2-mile runs.
It is not just my first 3-mile run, but also my first run after the Singapore Half Marathon more than a week ago. And guess what? Yes, the right knee pain appeared halfway. I thought "Oh no, is this going to be like, permanent?" But I decided to continue and ignore the pain. It is not going to stop me from completing my first 3-mile run! And I keep reminding myself that THIS is nothing compared to what I had endured during the half marathon. This is peanuts! With that, I felt more motivated to keep running, and praying for pain relief. And amazingly, the pain left towards the final 1/3 of the run! I was aiming to do below 30 minutes, but had to slow down because of the pain. Nevermind, there's always a first time, and I'll definitely be able to run a better time than this!
I'm waiting for my salary and 1 month bonus to come in, before registering for the Phuket half marathon in June, and to book my flight and hotel. All in all, I reckon it's not going to cost more than RM800 for everything - registration fee, hotel, flight, food and taxi. I have about 6 months to train, so I have ample time to prepare well. I learnt my lessons in the first run. Will look forward to a PAINLESS run. And a better time than the 3 hours and 3 minutes and 13 seconds. I hope to achieve a sub-2hrs 30mins run :)
Oh, tomorrow will be my last day at work, before going on my Christmas holidays :) Have a nice Thursday, Friends!
Toxic? (PART TWO)
Hi Friends! This post is part two of the response to a post by a blog friend of mine,
Small Footprints. I was supposed to post this on Sunday, but don't know why my internet connection was down for the past couple of days. Sorry about that!
This post will be quite long too, so don't say I didn't warn 'ya :)
4. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate or Sulfate (SLS)
The "bad" name for SLS had been circulating on the internet since I finished high school, which wasn't THAT many years ago (10 years, to be exact) :) Is it really BAD, specifically in causing cancer? The answer is NO. My friends over in Snopes.com, a great website for checking various myths or rumors under the sun, had done an excellent "exposure" on the truth about SLS:
Sodium lauryl sulfate (also known as sodium laurel sulfate, or SLS) and its chemical relative, sodium laureth sulfate (i.e., sodium lauryl ether sulfate, or SLES), are substances used in products such as shampoo, toothpaste, and mouth rinses as foaming and cleansing agents, producing the lather and clean hair we all know and love. (SLS, because it is cheaper to produce, is more commonly used than SLES) SLS is an irritant, and a shampoo containing 15% SLS is mainly tolerable only because it comes in contact with the scalp for just a few minutes and is diluted with water while in use. Should you get some in your eyes you'd certainly want to flush it out as soon as possible, and you really don't want to swallow the stuff. Those are the greatest dangers SLS poses to the average consumer, however. FDA does require that fluoride toothpastes shipped as of 7 April 1998 carry a warning label about the dangers of swallowing too much toothpaste, and SLS is one of the three ingredients (along with sorbitol and fluoride) identified as posing a health risk. Because it causes cancer? No, because it can cause diarrhea.
SLS is even found in food products such as candy. For example, it's an ingredient in Candy Bubbles, described as "Bubbles you can eat!" Although the label warns that the product should not be eaten outright, Candy Bubbles are touted as a fat-free, calorie-free edible product. Hardly something the FDA would allow to remain on the market if one of its ingredients were known to cause cancer.
Additionally, all manufacturers of hazardous chemicals in the U.S. are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a part of the U.S. Department of Labor, to file Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for those products. An MSDS "contains written or printed material concerning a hazardous chemical as prescribed by law," including information "needed to insure the safety and health of the user at all stages of (the chemical's) manufacture, storage, use, and disposal." Examining the MSDS for sodium lauryl sulfate, we find that the "Health Hazard Data" section that SLS can produce some rather nasty side effects if you inhale or ingest it, get it in your eyes, or leave it in contact with your skin for too long. But we already knew all that, and the general results of this misuse are symptoms such as skin irritation or nausea, not cancer.
In fact, three different agencies - OSHA, the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have all rated SLS as being non-carcinogenic.
How about the rest of this message? Should we be concerned because "the fact is that SLS is used to scrub garage floors, and it is very strong"? Not really. Detergent is detergent; the same properties that make a substance useful for cleaning your hair make it useful for cleaning your clothes or a garage floor. Obviously you wouldn't want to use the same strength of a substance such as SLS on your hair as you would on a garage floor, and that's why shampoos typically contain no more than a 15% SLS solution. Cinnamon oil is "very strong" too, and you'd burn your mouth if you swallowed it undiluted. That doesn't mean that lesser concentrations of cinnamon oil are harmful, though.
We're also warned that "research has shown that in the 1980's, the chance of getting cancer is one out of 8000 and now in the 1990's, the chances of getting cancer is one in three," as if the chances of contracting cancer had skyrocketed in the last few decades (with the implication that substances such as SLS are to blame for this rise). According to the American Cancer Society, the "probability that an individual, over the course of their lifetime, will develop cancer or die from it" was one in three for both men and women in the 1980s, and one in two for men and one in three in women in 1998. Hardly the alarming jump claimed. You might still think that one in three sounds awfully high, and that something must be causing all this cancer, something that didn't exist or wasn't in common use several decades ago, when far fewer people died or cancer. It's true that something causes cancer, but it's a fallacy to assume that this something wasn't around back in the days when fewer people died of cancer. A large part of the reason that so many people die of cancer these days is that they live much longer and don't die of something else first. Everybody dies of something, and since relatively few people these days die of smallpox or the plague or the measles or tuberculosis or polio or any of a number of other maladies we've cured or eliminated, they're around long enough to contract cancer. It's hardly alarming that people die of cancer in their seventies instead of dropping dead of heart attacks in their fifties.
So where does the idea that SLS is carcinogenic come from? Back in the 1970s some shampoos were found to be contaminated with small amounts of nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. Ethanolamine lauryl sulfates used in these shampoos were determined to be the source of the nitrosamine contamination, and manufacturers took corrective action. Perhaps someone is now confusing ethanolamine lauryl sulfate with sodium lauryl sulfate. Or, since the "SLS is dangerous" message has been widely disseminated by sellers of "alternative" or "all natural" products who tout that their wares don't contain SLS, perhaps someone in the "natural products" business deliberately created the message as a way of drumming up sales. There's nothing like an unfounded medical scare to get those cash registers ringing, and you can altruistically claim you have your customers' best interests at heart while you fleece them.
Wherever this notion came from, there simply is no medical evidence that SLS poses a significant risk of cancer to consumers of household products such as shampoo and toothpaste.
Based on the HSDB, here are the evidence-based human health effects of SLS:
(i) Can produce allergic sensitivity reactions.
(ii) May produce drying effect on skin.
(iii) Commonest cause of eye irritation by commercial shampoos.
(iv) Among 242 patients suffering from eczematous dermatitis, the percentage of allergic reactions reached 54.6%. Great number of allergic reactions to SLS (6.4%) was observed.
(
Blondeel et al., 1978) **PEER REVIEWED**
(v) Widely used anionic detergents of low acute & chronic toxicity.
(vi) Poison by intravernous and intraperitoneal routes. Moderately toxic by ingestion and a human skin irritant.
(vii) Minimum Fatal Dose Level:
PROBABLE ORAL LETHAL DOSE (HUMAN) 0.5-5 G/KG, BETWEEN 1 OZ & 1 PINT (OR 1 LB) FOR 70 KG PERSON (150 LB).
Based on the facts available, I don't think anyone should be afraid of using products containing SLS.
5. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
The answer for this chemical is similar to the one above, since the chemical actions are the same as SLS.
The Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) and the American Cancer Society have stated that the common belief that SLES is a carcinogen is an urban legend or a myth, a view confirmed by toxicology research by the OSHA, NTP, and IARC. SLES and SLS, and subsequently the products containing them, have been found to contain parts-per-thousand to parts-per-million levels of 1,4-dioxane, with the recommendation that these levels be monitored. EPA considers 1,4-dioxane to be a probable human carcinogen, meaning that a daily consumption of one gram of 1,4-dioxane over a lifetime would increase the cancer risk by about one part in 3000. Such an intake would correspond to eating liters of "contaminated" SLES on a daily basis, which would be rather unhealthy because of the SLES itself, which is not used in products that are intended for oral ingestion. FDA encourages manufacturers to remove 1,4-dioxane, although it is not required by federal law.
So is there any concern about SLES, or SLS? Nopey nope nope.
6. Triclosan
BINGO!!! Why bingo? Because, of all 6 ingredients proposed to be "toxic", this is the one I could confirm to be BAD. Ladies and gentlemen, friends, PLEASE avoid using products containing triclosan.
Reports have suggested that triclosan can combine with chlorine in tap water to form chloroform gas, which EPA classifies as a probable human carcinogen. As a result, triclosan was the target of a UK cancer alert, even though the study showed that the amount of chloroform generated was less than amounts often present in chlorinated drinking waters.
Triclosan reacts with the free chlorine in tap water to also produce lesser amounts of other compounds, like 2,4-dichlorophenol. Most of these intermediates convert into dioxins upon exposure to UV radiation (from the sun or other sources). Although small amounts of dioxins are produced, there is a great deal of concern over this effect because some dioxins are extremely toxic and are very potent endocrine disruptors. They are also chemically very stable, so that they are eliminated from the body very slowly (they can bioaccumulate to dangerous levels), and they persist in the environment for a very long time.
A 2006 study concluded that low doses of triclosan act as an endocrine disruptor in the North American bullfrog. The hypothesis proposed is that triclosan blocks the metabolism of thyroid hormone, because it chemically mimics thyroid hormone, and binds to the hormone receptor sites, blocking them, so that normal hormones cannot be utilized. The negative effects of Triclosan on the environment and its questionable benefits in toothpastes has led to the Swedish Naturskyddsföreningen to recommend not using triclosan in toothpaste.
Triclosan is used in many common household products including Clearasil Daily Face Wash, Dentyl mouthwash, Dawn, the Colgate Total range, Crest Cavity Protection, Softsoap, Dial, Right Guard deodorant, Sensodyne Total Care, Old Spice and Mentadent.
At this time, in the United States, manufacturers of products containing triclosan must say so somewhere on the label.
STRIKE ONE:
In one study, recently accepted for publication in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives and made available online, Isaac Pessah, PhD, director of the U.C. Davis Children's Center for Environmental Health, looked at how triclosan may affect the brain. Pessah's test-tube study found that the chemical attached itself to special "receptor" molecules on the surface of cells. This raises calcium levels inside the cell. Cells overloaded with calcium get overexcited. In the brain, these overexcited cells may burn out neural circuits, which could lead to an imbalance that affects mental development. Some people may carry a mutated gene that makes it easier for triclosan to attach to their cells. That could make them more vulnerable to any effects triclosan may cause.
STRIKE TWO:
In another recent study this year, UC Davis researchers calls into question the widespread use of two active ingredients - triclocarban and triclosan - in personal hygiene products, including anti-bacterial bar and liquid soaps. Using human and animal cell lines, researchers found that triclocarban disrupts reproductive hormone activity and triclosan interferes a type of cell signaling that occurs in brain, heart and other cells.
"Americans spend nearly one billion dollars a year on these products even though recent studies show that they are no better than regular soap and water at reducing the spread of illness. Now we have added evidence that, in some cases, the benefits may not be worth the risks," said Dan Chang, professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering.
"Manufacturers of products containing triclosan and triclocarban should consider providing cautionary labels. There are new health-related data on these chemicals that consumers should know about, even if the research is in its early stages," Chang said.
The current study was published online in Environmental Health Perspectives, a publication of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, in May.
The authors of the study are part of the UC Davis Superfund Basic Research Program. The group, part of a national network, is charged with assessing and understanding the effects that exposure to environmental substances have on human health.
"We decided to take a look at triclocarban and triclosan because these compounds appeared to be building up in the environment," said Bruce Hammock, an Superfund Basic Research Program investigator and professor of entomology. The compounds are also increasingly being detected in human breast milk and urine, he said.
Triclosan and triclocarban were first introduced for use by surgeons and other operating room personnel to prevent bacterial infections. Today they are inexpensive and readily available, in part because the patents on them have expired. "We are not concerned about limited use in settings with clearly edvident high-value such as in surgical settings. It's the widespread use that is of concern," Hammock said.
Superfund researchers use bioassays to measure the kind of effects a substance might have on living organisms, using animal or human cell lines as proxies for human exposure. The four assays in this study looked at the effects of triclocarban and triclosan. One assay tests a second messenger system broadly used by cells in the peripheral and central nervous systems, a second examines another pathway important in protein synthesis and two assays evaluate the activity of male and female sex hormones (androgens and estrogens).
The first assay involved observing the impact of the chemicals on ryanodine receptors, proteins that serve to keep calcium levels in balance. Calcium is needed for proper cell signaling, especially in brain, heart and muscle cells where these receptors are found. Disrupting these levels could lead to alterations in cell function. Triclosan significantly increased resting calcium levels in the mouse cells used in the assay.
The second assay looked at the impact on aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhR). Normally, this cell-surface receptor binds a protein that leads to changes in gene expression, the process by which information encoded in the DNA is translated into proteins. Binding of this receptor by the environmental toxin dioxin has been shown to cause everything from birth defects to tumor production. Triclosan exhibited weak activity in the AhR bioassay. Triclocarban exhibited no activity.
Because of feedback loops in the body, amplification of these hormones could have the effect of depressing natural estrogen and androgen production, potentially impacting fertility and other hormone-dependent processes. In the current study, besides carrying out the AhR assays, co-author Michael Denison repeated Lasley's experiments using a different human cell line. Denison, a professor of environmental toxicology, observed a similar amplification effect.
Chang said he feels strongly that consumers be provided information about potential hazards, though he is quick to point out that those who are not in high-risk groups may decide to continue their use of triclosan- and triclocarban-containing products. "I have not stopped using my gingivitis-fighting toothpaste. However, if I were a pregnant woman or the parent of a small child, I might check the labels of the products that I use and stop using any that contain those chemicals until we can work this out," Chang said.
And STRIKE THREE (AND Y'RE OUT!):
In a Dec 2007 study (please email me at tanj3@wyeth.com if you want the full paper), Aiello et al. concluded that the lack of an additional health benefit associated with the use of triclosan-containing consumer soaps over regular soap, coupled with laboratory data demonstrating a potential risk of selecting for drug resistance, warrants further evaluation by governmental regulators regarding antibacterial product claims and advertising. Further studies of this issue are encouraged.
So the overall conclusion for these two posts (PART ONE & TWO) is:
DEA, PP, Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, SLS and SLES are SAFE to be used.
Triclosan MUST BE AVOIDED at all costs!
